❌ Common Mistakes During Sports

❌ “I got hurt in my leg.” (wrong preposition)
✅ “I hurt my leg.” / “My leg hurts.”
“Got hurt in my leg” is not standard. Use “hurt + body part” directly: “I hurt my knee.” Or: “My knee hurts.” — simple and correct.
❌ “He is doing cheating!” (wrong structure)
✅ “He is cheating!”
“Cheating” is already a verb. Don’t add “doing” before it. Same for: “He is pushing” (not “doing pushing”), “She is winning” (not “doing winning”).
❌ “Give me a chance!” (sounds demanding)
✅ “Can I have a turn, please?”
“Give me” sounds rude. “Can I have” is polite and friendly. Add “please” to make it even better. Works for everything: turns, balls, equipment.
❌ “I am feeling thirst.” (wrong grammar)
✅ “I’m thirsty.” / “I’m feeling thirsty.”
“Thirst” is a noun. “Thirsty” is the adjective. Same: “I’m hungry” (not “feeling hunger”), “I’m tired” (not “feeling tiredness”).
❌ “We loosed the match.” (wrong word)
✅ “We lost the match.”
“Lose” becomes “lost” (past tense), NOT “loosed.” “Loose” means not tight (like a loose shirt). “Lose” means to not win. Very different words!

🧠 Parent Tips — Sports English at Home

🏏

Play & Talk in English

When playing any game at home — cricket, badminton, even carrom — use English: “Your turn!”, “Good shot!”, “Pass it here!” This makes sports vocabulary natural and fun.

🤝

Teach Winning & Losing Words

After any game, practice: “Good game!” and “Well played!” This builds sportsmanship AND English. Teach “We lost” (not “loosed”) and “I hurt my knee” (not “my knee is paining”).

📺

Watch Sports in English

Watch cricket or football commentary in English together. Kids pick up words like “boundary,” “goal,” “offside,” “penalty” naturally. Ask: “What did the commentator say?”

Praise Effort, Not Just Winning

“You played your best!” and “Great effort!” are powerful sentences. Teach your child that sportsmanship matters more than the score. This builds both character and vocabulary.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

How to talk during sports period in English?

Use encouraging words like “Good shot!”, “Pass the ball!”, “My turn!” For the PT teacher, say “Sir, may I sit out? I’m not feeling well.” Always use “May I” for permission and be a good sport — say “Well played!” even when you lose.

What is sportsmanship?

Sportsmanship means fair and generous behaviour during games. It means shaking hands after a match, saying “Well played!” to the other team, not cheating, and accepting defeat gracefully. Good sportsmanship makes you a better person, not just a better player.

What’s the difference between “lose” and “loose”?

“Lose” (one ‘o’) means to not win: “We might lose the match.” “Loose” (two ‘o’s) means not tight: “My shoelace is loose.” The past tense of “lose” is “lost” — never “loosed.”

How to tell the PT teacher you are injured?

Say “Sir, I hurt my knee. May I sit out?” or “Ma’am, I twisted my ankle. Can I go to the medical room?” Don’t say “leg is paining” — say “my leg hurts” instead. Be specific about where it hurts.
