The Thirsty Crow

A Famous Indian Folktale

A clever crow finds a smart way to drink water!

📚 From: Panchatantra (India)

📖 The Thirsty Crow

1

It was a very hot summer day. The sun was burning bright in the sky. A crow was flying from place to place. He was very, very thirsty.

2

The crow flew over fields and trees, but he could not find any water. “I need water!” he cried. “I must find water before I fall down!”

3

Soon, the crow saw a pot standing under a tree. He flew down quickly with joy. “Water! I can see water!” he said happily.

4

But when the crow looked inside the pot, the water was at the very bottom. He put his beak inside, but he could not reach the water. The pot was too deep and the water was too low!

5

The crow thought and thought. He did not give up. He looked around and saw many small stones on the ground. Suddenly, he had a wonderful idea!

6

The clever crow picked up a stone in his beak and dropped it into the pot. Plop! The water came up a tiny bit. He dropped another stone. Plop! The water came up a little more.

7

One by one, the crow kept dropping stones into the pot. Slowly, slowly, the water rose higher and higher. After many stones, the water finally reached the top!

8

The happy crow drank the cool water. “Ahh! That was so good!” he said. He was not thirsty anymore. The clever crow flew away singing a happy song.
