❌ Common Assembly English Mistakes

❌ “Stand in line!” (rude/incomplete)
✅ “Stand in a straight line, please.”
Always add “please” to make instructions polite. “A straight line” is more specific than just “line.” Assembly leaders should sound polite, not like they’re shouting orders.
❌ “Today news is…” (missing possessive)
✅ “Today’s news is…” / “Here are today’s headlines.”
“Today’s” (with apostrophe + s) means “of today.” This is a possessive form. “Today news” sounds incomplete — always say “today’s news.”
❌ “I will told about Gandhi.” (wrong tense)
✅ “I would like to share a few words about Gandhi.”
“Will told” mixes future and past tense. “Would like to share” is a polite and correct way to introduce a speech topic.
❌ “Give a clap for him!” (Indian English)
✅ “Let us give a big round of applause!”
“Give a clap” is Indian English. Standard English uses “a round of applause.” You can also say “Please clap for him!” or “Let’s give a hand!”
❌ “Don’t do noise!” (wrong verb)
✅ “Don’t make noise!” / “Keep quiet, please.”
We “make” noise, not “do” noise. Same pattern: “make a mistake” (not “do a mistake”), “make a mess” (not “do a mess”).

🧠 Parent Tips — Assembly Practice

🎤

Practice Being Assembly Leader

Let your child practice: “Good morning everyone! Let us begin with the morning prayer.” → “Now let us sing the national anthem.” → “The assembly is now over.” This builds public speaking confidence!

📰

Start a “News Time” at Home

Let your child read one newspaper headline in English daily. Use the formula: “Here are today’s headlines… That is all for today’s news. Thank you.” Real news reading practice helps in assembly.

👏

Teach “Applause” not “Clap”

“Give a clap” is Indian English. Teach “Let us give a round of applause” or “Please clap for her.” Also teach “make noise” not “do noise” — small changes that sound much more natural.

🇮🇳

Talk About National Days

Before Republic Day, Independence Day, or Gandhi Jayanti, practice the speech sentences at home. “Today we celebrate…” and “I would like to share a few words about…” make great practice starters.
