❌ Common Exam English Mistakes

❌ “I got passed in the exam.” (wrong grammar)
✅ “I passed the exam.” / “I got a pass.”
“Passed” is already a verb — don’t add “got” before it. Say “I passed the exam” or “I got a pass in English.”
❌ “Give me one more sheet.” (rude)
✅ “Ma’am, may I have an extra sheet?”
“Give me” sounds demanding. Always use “May I have” in exams to be polite to the invigilator.
❌ “The paper was too much tough.” (wrong structure)
✅ “The paper was very tough.” / “The paper was too tough.”
“Too much” is used before nouns (“too much water”). Before adjectives, use “very” or “too”: “very tough” or “too tough.”
❌ “I wrote the exam.” (Indian English)
✅ “I took the exam.” / “I sat for the exam.”
In standard English, you “take” or “sit for” an exam. “Write” is common in Indian English but not standard globally.
❌ “My marks are less.” (incomplete comparison)
✅ “My marks are lower than expected.” / “I scored less than I hoped.”
“Less” or “lower” needs a comparison — less than what? Always complete the comparison or say “not as good as I expected.”

🧠 Parent Tips — Exam Time

📖

Teach “Take the Exam” not “Write”

“I wrote the exam” is Indian English. Standard English uses “I took the exam” or “I sat for the exam.” Practice this at home: “How did you do on the exam you took today?”

🙋

Practice Polite Exam Requests

Children often panic during exams and blurt out “Give me one more sheet!” Role-play polite alternatives: “Ma’am, may I have an extra sheet?” and “Sir, my pen stopped working. May I use a pencil?”

😌

Normalize Exam Feelings

Teach “I’m feeling nervous” and “Don’t worry, you’ll do well!” Acknowledging feelings in English builds emotional vocabulary. After the exam: “How was it? I’m proud you tried your best!”

🏆

Talk About Results Positively

“I need to improve” is better than “I failed.” “I’ll work harder next time” builds a growth mindset in English. Celebrate effort: “You prepared well, and that’s what matters!”
