❓ FAQ
Why does English have silent letters?
English kept old spellings when pronunciation changed. ‘Knight’ once pronounced the K (k-NICHT). ‘Write’ once had a spoken W. Over centuries, sounds dropped but spelling stayed frozen.
How many silent letter patterns are there?
Main patterns: KN- (K silent), WR- (W silent), -MB (B silent), GH (silent in -IGHT, -OUGH), and individual words (island, receipt, muscle). This page covers all major patterns.
Why is rhythm spelled without a normal vowel?
‘Rhythm’ uses Y as its only vowel — Y functions as a vowel in this word. It comes from Greek ‘rhythmos’. The H’s are also unusual — it has 2 H’s! R-H-Y-T-H-M.
How to remember silent letters?
Learn by pattern: all KN words (knee, knife, know), all WR words (write, wrong), all -MB words (climb, thumb). When writing, say every syllable slowly: WED-NES-DAY, FEB-RU-ARY.
Do silent letters serve any purpose?
Yes! They show word origins (knight = Germanic, psychology = Greek), distinguish homophones (knight ≠ night, write ≠ right), and sometimes affect nearby vowels (make has silent E that lengthens A).
