📐 5 Spelling Rules

Competition Tip: Ask for a Sentence!

Always ask ‘Can I have it in a sentence?’ This helps you understand which word it is (there/their/they’re).

✅ Judge: spell ‘principal’. You: ‘Can I have it in a sentence?’ Judge: ‘The principal of the school.’

Competition Tip: Say It Slowly

Break the word into syllables in your head. sep-a-rate, gov-ern-ment, en-vi-ron-ment. Spell each part.

✅ en-vi-ron-ment = E-N-V-I-R-O-N-M-E-N-T

Competition Tip: Spell Then Re-Spell

Say the word, spell it letter by letter, then say the word again: ‘Separate. S-E-P-A-R-A-T-E. Separate.’

✅ Wednesday. W-E-D-N-E-S-D-A-Y. Wednesday.

Master the Double Letter Patterns

Most competition words have double letters. Know which ones double: accommodate (CC,MM), embarrass (RR,SS), success (CC,SS).

✅ accommodate, embarrass, success, occasion, recommend
