Analogies

Word Relationships & Patterns

Master the “A is to B as C is to D” pattern — a competitive exam favourite!

📖 Let’s Learn Analogies!

An analogy shows a relationship between two pairs of words. It follows the pattern: “A is to B as C is to D.” Written as: hot : cold :: day : night (hot is to cold as day is to night — both are opposites!).

Analogies test your understanding of word relationships — synonyms, antonyms, part-whole, cause-effect, and more. They are a favourite in competitive exams like Olympiads, NTSE, and entrance tests!

💡 The Rule

Format: A : B :: C : D (read as “A is to B as C is to D”)
Step 1: Find the relationship between A and B.
Step 2: Apply the SAME relationship to C and find D.
Example: hot : cold :: day : ? → hot is OPPOSITE of cold, day is OPPOSITE of night.

Fun Facts

Analogies have been used in IQ tests since 1905! They test your ability to see patterns and relationships — a key indicator of intelligence.

The SAT (American college entrance exam) used to have an entire section on analogies! Even though it was removed in 2005, analogies are still tested in Indian Olympiads, NTSE, and other competitive exams.
