Suffixes

Add Letters After a Word to Change Its Meaning

Learn how adding letters at the END of a word changes what it means or how it is used!

📖 Let’s Learn Suffixes!

A suffix is a group of letters added to the end of a word to change its meaning or how the word is used. For example, “help” is a verb. Add “-ful” and you get “helpful” — now it is an adjective!

Suffixes are incredibly powerful. They can turn a verb into a noun (teach → teacher), a noun into an adjective (care → careful), or an adjective into an adverb (slow → slowly). Learning suffixes helps you build words like building blocks!

💡 The Rule

A suffix is added to the end of a word. It can change the word meaning or its part of speech. Sometimes spelling of the base word changes slightly.

🎯 Key Concept

-ful = full of (helpful, beautiful, careful)
🚫 -less = without (careless, homeless, fearless)
📏 -ness = state of (kindness, darkness, sadness)
🏃 -ly = in a way (slowly, quickly, happily)
