Long Vowel Words

The Magic E Rule

Add a silent “e” at the end and the vowel says its own name!

📖 Let’s Learn Long Vowel Words

Sometimes a vowel says its own name instead of its short sound. Compare: “cap” (short a sound) vs “cape” (long A — it says “ay”). This happens because of a special rule called Magic E!

When you add a silent “e” at the end of some words, the middle vowel becomes long and says its own alphabet name. This is one of the most important phonics rules in English — once you learn it, you can read hundreds of new words!

💡 The Rule

Magic E Rule: When you add a silent “e” at the end, the vowel in the middle says its own name (long sound). Example: cap → cape, hat → hate, kit → kite.

🎯 Key Concept

🎩 Short vowel: cap (short a)
✨ Add silent e: cape (long A — says “ay”)
The “e” is silent but it changes everything!
