Consonant Blends
CVCC & CCVC WordsTwo consonants together that keep their own sounds!
📖 Let’s Learn Consonant Blends
A consonant blend is when two or more consonants come together in a word, and you can still hear each letter’s sound. For example, in the word “jump”, you can hear both “m” and “p” at the end. That’s a blend!
Blends are everywhere in English — at the beginning of words (swim, stop, frog) and at the end of words (jump, hand, milk). Once you learn to spot blends, reading becomes much easier!
💡 The Rule
In a blend, you hear BOTH consonant sounds. Practice blending them smoothly: “jump” = j-u-m-p, all sounds heard clearly.
🎯 Key Concept
CVCC = Consonant + Vowel + Consonant + Consonant (like “jump”, “lamp”)
CCVC = Consonant + Consonant + Vowel + Consonant (like “swim”, “stop”)
