Question Marks & Exclamation Marks

Special signs that change the meaning of sentences!

๐Ÿ“– What are Punctuation?

In Grade 1, you learned about full stops (.). Now let’s learn two more important punctuation marks: the question mark (?) and the exclamation mark (!).

These marks change how a sentence sounds and what it means. A full stop makes a calm statement. A question mark turns it into a question. And an exclamation mark shows strong feelings like excitement, surprise, or warning!

๐Ÿ’ก The Rule

Full stop (.): ends a normal telling sentence.
Question mark (?): ends a question.
Exclamation mark (!): ends a strong-feeling sentence.

Fun Facts

The exclamation mark (!) was invented in the 15th century! Before that, writers had no way to show excitement in writing.

In Spanish, questions and exclamations have upside-down marks at the beginning too: ยฟCรณmo estรกs? and ยกHola!. English only uses them at the end.
