Metaphors

Comparing WITHOUT Like or As

Discover the most powerful literary device — saying something IS something else!

📖 Let’s Learn Metaphors!

In Grade 4, you learned similes — comparing with “like” or “as” (brave as a lion). Now meet the metaphor — a comparison that says something IS something else, without using like or as! Instead of “Life is like a journey”, a metaphor says “Life IS a journey.”

Metaphors are more powerful than similes because they don’t just compare — they transform. When you say “Time is money”, you make people THINK about time as if it were actual money — precious, limited, and not to be wasted!

💡 The Rule

Simile: She is like a star. (comparison with like/as)
Metaphor: She IS a star. (says she IS one — no like/as!)
Key: Metaphors say A IS B, not A is like B.

🎯 Key Concept

🌊 “Life is a journey.” (life = journey)
