You will read 4 different passages — about a banyan tree, Indian railways, Kalpana Chawla, and why leaves change colour. After each passage, answer the questions by finding clues IN the passage.

“The banyan tree is India’s national tree. Unlike most trees, a banyan grows roots from its branches that hang down and take root. Over time, a single tree can spread over a huge area! The Great Banyan Tree near Kolkata is over 250 years old and covers 14,500 sq metres — it looks like a forest but is ONE tree!”

“Kalpana Chawla was born on 17th March 1962 in Karnal, Haryana. She became an aerospace engineer and in 1997, became the first Indian-born woman to go to space on the Space Shuttle Columbia. She said, “The path from dreams to success does exist.” Sadly, on 1st February 2003, Columbia broke apart during re-entry. India remembers her as a hero.”

“Leaves are green because of chlorophyll, which helps them make food from sunlight (photosynthesis). In autumn, days get shorter, trees stop making chlorophyll, and other colours — yellow, orange, red — become visible! These colours were always there, hidden behind the green. In India, see this in Himachal, Kashmir, and Western Ghats in October-November.”
