A conjunction is a word that joins two words, phrases, or sentences together. In Grade 2, you learned to join with “and”. Now let us learn more conjunctions: but, or, because, so!

Each conjunction has a different job: “and” adds ideas, “but” shows contrast, “or” gives choices, “because” gives reasons, and “so” shows results. Using conjunctions makes your writing smoother and more interesting!

and = adds ideas. but = shows contrast/difference. or = gives a choice. because = gives a reason. so = shows a result.

The conjunctions and, but, or are called “coordinating conjunctions”. There are only 7 of them in English: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so — remember them as FANBOYS!
