Types of Nouns

Common, Proper & Collective Nouns

Not all nouns are the same — learn the 3 types!

📖 Let’s Learn Types of Nouns!

In Grades 1-2, you learned that a noun is a naming word — it names a person, place, animal, or thing. Now in Grade 3, let us learn that there are different types of nouns: Common, Proper, and Collective.

A common noun is a general name (boy, city, river). A proper noun is a specific name and always starts with a capital letter (Rahul, Mumbai, Ganga). A collective noun names a group of things (a flock of birds, a team of players).

💡 The Rule

Common noun = general name (boy, city) — lowercase.
Proper noun = specific name (Rahul, Mumbai) — CAPITAL letter.
Collective noun = name for a group (a flock, a team, a bunch).
