Reading Comprehension

Read & Answer Practice

Practice reading short passages and answering questions!

📖 What is Reading Comprehension?

Reading comprehension means understanding what you read. When you read a passage, try to remember important details — who, what, where, when, and why.

Then you can answer questions about it! This is one of the most important skills in English — and in school exams too. The trick is to read carefully, then find the answer in the passage.

💡 4 Steps to Answer

How to answer comprehension questions:
(1) Read the passage carefully
(2) Read the question
(3) Find the answer IN the passage
(4) Write your answer in a full sentence

📖 4 Passages to Practice

Read each passage carefully, then answer the questions!

My grandmother makes tasty mango pickle and mango juice from the mangoes. The whole family loves to sit under the tree on hot summer days. The mango tree gives us shade, fruit, and happiness.

Passage 3: My Favourite Festival

Diwali is my favourite festival. It comes every year in October or November. Before Diwali, we clean our house and decorate it with colourful lights called diyas. On Diwali day, we wear new clothes and visit our neighbours. Amma makes delicious sweets like laddu and barfi. In the evening, children burst small crackers and light sparklers. The whole sky looks beautiful with lights. Diwali is a time for family, sweets, and joy.

📝 Answer These Questions:

What is the favourite festival?

What do they light?

What sweets does Amma make?

The ant climbed onto the leaf and was saved! A few days later, a hunter came to catch the dove. The ant saw this and bit the hunter’s foot. The hunter shouted “Ouch!” and dropped his net. The dove flew away safely. The ant and the dove became good friends.

Fun Facts

Reading comprehension is the #1 skill tested in school exams! If you can read and understand passages, you can answer questions in every subject.

The best way to improve comprehension is to read every day. Even 10 minutes of reading a day can make a huge difference!

🧠 Tips for Parents

📖

Read Together Daily

Spend 10-15 minutes reading together. Take turns reading paragraphs. Ask “What was this about?”

Ask After Reading

After every story or passage, ask 3 questions: Who? What? Where? Builds comprehension habit.

📝

Retell in Own Words

Ask your child to retell what they read in their own words. Tests understanding, not memorization.
