Reading sentences is the next big step after learning words! When you can read a sentence, you can understand stories, books, signs, and messages. Let’s practice reading short, simple sentences together. Take your time, sound out each word, and try to picture what the sentence means.
💡 The Rule
To read a sentence: (1) Read each word from left to right, (2) Sound out any tricky words, (3) Understand the meaning of the whole sentence.
📖 The 4 Steps
Here’s what you need to know!
Step 1: Look
Look at the first word and start from the left

- Sat…
- …on the mat.
Step 2: Sound
Sound out each word using phonics
- c-a-t = cat
- s-u-n = sun
- r-u-n = run
- b-i-g = big
Step 3: Picture
Picture the sentence in your mind
- Imagine a cat
- See it sitting
- On a soft mat
- In your head
Step 4: Understand
Think about what the sentence means
- Where is the cat?
- On the mat!
- What is it doing?
- Sitting!
