The Sage and the Mouse — Short Story with Vocabulary for Kids
A mouse becomes a tiger but still fears cats — be content with who you are!
📖 The Sage and the Mouse
Deep in the forests of the Western Ghats, there lived a powerful sage named Muni. He spent his days meditating under a peepal tree, at peace with the world.
One day, a tiny mouse fell from a hawk’s claws right into Muni’s lap! The frightened little mouse looked up at the sage with big, terrified eyes.
“Don’t be afraid, little one,” said Muni kindly. He used his magical powers and turned the mouse into a strong cat!
“Now you are bigger and no hawk can catch you!” said Muni.
The cat was happy at first. But then, a dog started chasing him!
“Muni! Help! The dog will eat me!” cried the cat.
Muni smiled and turned the cat into a big dog. The dog was happy — until a leopard appeared in the forest!
“Muni! Save me! The leopard is coming!”
Muni turned the dog into a leopard. The leopard roamed the forest proudly — until one day, he heard a tiger’s roar!
“MUNI! Please! Make me a tiger! Tigers fear nothing!”
Muni sighed but granted the wish. The mouse-turned-cat-turned-dog-turned-leopard was now a magnificent tiger!
The tiger strutted through the forest. All animals ran from him. He was the most powerful creature in the forest!
But one evening, the tiger was walking near the village when he saw… a cat. And the cat hissed at him.
The mighty tiger jumped back in fear! His heart was pounding! He ran back to Muni, trembling.
“Why are you shaking?” asked Muni. “You are a tiger! Why would you fear a cat?”
“I… I don’t know,” said the tiger. “Something inside me is still afraid. I still feel like a mouse.”
Muni nodded wisely. “That is because you ARE still a mouse — in your heart. I changed your body, but I cannot change your nature. A tiger’s body with a mouse’s heart is still a mouse.”
He turned the tiger back into a little mouse.
“Be happy being a mouse,” said Muni gently. “Every creature has its own special place in the world. Be the best mouse you can be — that is enough.”
The little mouse looked up at Muni and, for the first time, felt truly at peace.
