📖 The Loyal Mongoose

In a peaceful village in Maharashtra, a farmer and his wife lived with their baby son and a pet mongoose. The mongoose was very loyal and loved the baby like his own brother.

One morning, the farmer’s wife needed to go to the market. She looked at the mongoose and said, “Watch over the baby while I am gone. I trust you.”

The mongoose sat beside the baby’s cradle, guarding him faithfully.

After some time, a large black cobra slithered into the house through a crack in the wall! The deadly snake moved silently towards the sleeping baby.

The mongoose saw the snake and sprang into action! He fought the cobra with all his strength. It was a fierce battle. The cobra hissed and struck. The mongoose dodged and bit. Finally, after a long fight, the brave mongoose killed the cobra.

The mongoose was proud. He had saved the baby! His mouth was covered in the cobra’s blood.

When the farmer’s wife returned from the market, the mongoose ran to the door to greet her, wagging his tail happily.

But the wife saw the blood on the mongoose’s mouth. She did not think. She did not check on the baby. She immediately assumed the worst.

“You monster! You killed my baby!” she screamed.

In a moment of blind rage, she hit the mongoose with a heavy water pot. The loyal mongoose fell to the ground, lifeless.

Then the wife ran inside to check on her baby. The baby was sleeping peacefully! And beside the cradle lay the dead cobra.

“No… NO!” cried the wife, falling to her knees. “The mongoose didn’t hurt my baby — he SAVED him! He killed the snake! And I… I killed him without thinking!”

She held the dead mongoose and wept bitterly. “If only I had stopped to think! If only I had not acted so hastily!”

The farmer came home and found his wife crying. When he heard what happened, he too was filled with grief.

“Let this be a lesson,” said the farmer sadly. “Never act in anger. Always think before you act. Once done, some things can never be undone.”

The village built a small memorial for the brave mongoose — so that no one would ever forget the cost of hasty action.
