📖 How -og words work

One ending, many beginnings

Change the first letter, get a new word

The -og family all end with the same two letters and the same sound. The vowel is a short o, the sound you hear in hot and pot.

DConsonant
+
OVowel
+
GConsonant
= DOG 🐕

💡 How it works

Keep the ending -og and swap the first letter: d + og = dog, f + og = fog, l + og = log. Because the ending never changes, every one of these words rhymes.

🔊 Saying the sounds correctly

Say the first sound short and clipped — /d/, not “duh”. Adding a little “uh” is the most common mistake, and it makes blending harder: “duh-og” does not sound like dog. Snap the first sound, then slide straight into og.

🌟 Fun facts and a rhyme

Two things to know, then something to sing

🌟

A hog is another word for a big pig, and a bog is soft, wet, muddy ground. A cog is one of the teeth on a wheel inside a machine.

Frog has four letters, not three, so it is not really a CVC word — it starts with the blend fr. We still learn it here because it rhymes perfectly with all the others. The same is true of blog, clog, slog and smog.

🐕 A dog sat on a log,
🌫️ In the thick morning fog!
🐸 Along came a frog,
🏃 Who went for a jog!

🧠 Tips for parents

Three things to try this week

🔊

Snap the first sound

Say /d/ quickly and quietly — not “duh”. A child who learns “duh” will read “duh-og” and never arrive at dog. Short first sound, then slide straight into og.

🔄

Swap one letter

Write og on paper and hold different letters in front of it — d, f, h, j, l, b, c. Your child reads each new word aloud. Seven words from one ending.

👂

Rhyme or not?

Say two words and ask if they rhyme: dog / log (yes), dog / dot (no). Hearing the difference comes before spelling it, and this game takes two minutes.
